CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION (CPR)
Training Program for Healthcare Providers

Course Purpose- The Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC) Programs of the American Heart Association (AHA) developed the Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider course to promote widespread training in CPR for the healthcare provider. The video and literature provide information to teach participants the skills of adult, child, and infant CPR with the use of appropriate barrier devices, bag-mask ventilation, use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and relief of foreign body airway obstruction (FBAO) for both the responsive and unresponsive victim. The course presumes that the skills learned will be used predominantly in a healthcare provider setting where the rescuer is expected to [provide resuscitation.

Course Description
- This 6 to 8 hour program involves multiple learning activities:

o A videotaped overview of the chain of survival and other cognitive information.
o An instructor lead discussion of the adult signs of heart attack, cardiac arrest, stroke & choking.
o Videotaped skills demonstration and practice.
    o Instructor led practice scenarios.
    o Peer practice sessions.

The length of the course is determined to a large extent by the participants needs. Participant -instructor ratio of 6-1 is recommended.

Course Objectives- To improve the rate of survival from sudden cardiac arrest by strengthening the Chain of Survival in the healthcare setting.

CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION (CPR)

Training in the Workplace

Course Purpose- The Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC) Programs of the American Heart Association (AHA) developed the HEARTSAVER CPR Course to promote widespread training in CPR in the workplace. Because the course is designed primarily for laypersons who are expected to provide CPR in the workplace, the course will focus on adult, child and infant CPR and relief of foreign body airway obstruction (FBAO) for the responsive victim.

Course Description
- The HEARTSAVER CPR Course provides concise, user-friendly information to train laypersons in the skills of adult, child and infant CPR. Relief of FBAO, mouth to mouth ventilation and rescue breathing using barrier devices are also required learning. Automated External Defibrillation (AED) training is provided upon request. The course runs approximately 3 hours for adult or for infant and children. The combined course, adult, child and infant lasts about 6 hours. A course completion card (or credential) is provided to participants who successfully complete skills demonstration and written examination.

Course Objectives- To increase survival from sudden cardiac arrest by increasing the number of rescuers prepared to phone 911 and provide early CPR. By strengthening the early access and early CPR links in the Chain of Survival in our community, the AHA and The Waukegan Fire Department should meet its goal: to reduce disability and death due to cardiovascular disease and stroke.
